UMSAILS UAP Spring School- 2022

Selected students from different law schools in Bangladesh, India and Bhutan participated in this program

The South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights (SAILS), Centre for Law, Governance and Policy (CELGAP) and the University of Asia Pacific (UAP), jointly organized a five-day-long residential Spring School on Law and Social Justice.

Selected students from different law schools in Bangladesh, India and Bhutan participated in this program from September 18 to 22 held at the Birulia area of Dhaka’s Savar where distinguished national and international personalities delivered lectures on various issues of law and social justice, said a press release issued on Sunday.

On the first day of the Spring School, Md Saleh Akram, assistant professor of the Department of Law and Human Rights at UAP delivered the welcome speech while Barrister Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Sabuj, advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and chairman, Centre for Law, Governance and Policy (CELGAP) was present as a special guest.

Dr Sharif Bhuiyan, advocate at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Director of SAILS chaired the session.  

Professor Dr Mizanur Rahman, director of Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) and Former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh discussed “Access to Justice for All: Challenges and Prospects” whereas Dr Shahdeen Malik, advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh lectured on “Judicial Activism and Rule of Law”.  

Dr Mahfuzul  Haque, former secretary, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh delivered his lecture on “Climate Justice and Water Security: Challenges and Opportunities” and Professor Dr Nakib Mohammad Nasrullah, law faculty of the University of Dhaka discussed “Marriage, Family and Civilization”.

Dr Syeda Sultana Razia, a professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dr Ahmed Mushtaque Raza Chowdhury, vice chairperson and adviser to the chairperson at Brac, Sheepa Hafiza, Equality and Rights defender and social analyst, Mohammad Azharul Islam, associate professor and head of Department of Law at Manarat International University, Nur Khan Liton, executive director and member, Executive Committee Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Cynthia Farid, Barrister Imran Abdullah Siddiq, Barrister Mohammad K Shahnewaz, Advocates of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh among others, shared their knowledge on different aspects of Law and Social Justice. 

An interview of Mozammel Hossain KC was taken by Barrister Sunny Abdul Haque, advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, added the release.

The closing ceremony of the Spring School was chaired by Dr Kamal Hossain, chairperson at SAILS, and senior advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh. 

Prof Dr Qumrul Ahsan, vice chancellor, UAP and Barrister Foyez Uddin Ahmed, advocate Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Treasurer, Centre for Law, Governance and Policy (CELGAP) delivered their speeches as special guests. 

Dr Chowdhury Ishrak Ahmed Siddiky, associate professor and head of the Department of Law and Human Rights, UAP gave the vote of thanks to the guests and the participants of the Spring School.
